<reviewbody>This one starts out well, even if you can ignore the hereford cattle and Mount Whitney in the background (Texas hasn't any hills that high...) of the start of the movie.

It was probably made for teenage boys on a Saturday matinee. Still the plot is better than most and so is the acting. But the ending blows it all and it gets Hollywood-sappy. I guess that's why I liked "the Unforgiven" so much since it had a realistic plot. Evil usually triumphs but that would not have been OK when this movie was made so I was not too disappointed when it turned stupid!</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Very well made, excellent acting. Reminiscent of Gunsmoke.

As for 'Slugs and urchins', you demonstrate a lack of historic knowledge and simple observation. I'm sure that Adolph Hitler and the pro-slavery advocates of the old American South would love to share your idea that evil always wins. If what you said is true, then we could not maintain enough goodness or have enough good people to build and sustain communities. Bridges could never have been built and hospitals never created.

Our American forfathers would never have sacrificed themselves for the birth of a new country. Soldiers would never have thrown themselves on grenades to save their buddies. Christ would have succumbed to the temptation to save Himself from the Cross during His prayer at Gethsemane.

History, as well as the present times, would be a much different thing if evil always won.</reviewbody>

    <reviewbody>KATPOOH9:

NO, EVIL DOES NOT ALWAYS TRIUMPH OVER GOOD. BUT,
IT IS JUST AS LIKELY TO. AND THERE'S NOTHING YOUR
IMAGINARY FRIEND CAN DO ABOUT IT.

OH...AND THE MOVIE? SUCKS.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Fans of westerns and of Randolph Scott won't be disappointed by this film, although it wasn't until his 1950's collaborations with Harry Joe Brown that Scott really hit his purple patch.
Good support from Edgar Buchanan and arch heavy Jack Lambert. Lloyd Bridges didn't have much to do and although Ann Dvorak's career was winding down at this point she still made a feisty leading lady</reviewbody>

<reviewbody>Abilene Town (1946). In the years following the Civil War, the town of Abilene, Kansas is poised on the brink of an explosive confrontation. A line has been drawn down the center of the town where the homesteaders and the cattlemen have come to a very uneasy truce. The delicate peace is inadvertantly shattered when a group of new homesteaders lay down their stakes on the cattlemen's side of town, upsetting the delicate balance that had existed thus far and sparking an all-out war between the farmers, who want the land tamed and property lines drawn, and the cowboys, who want the prairies to be open for their cattle to roam.</reviewbody>

<reviewbody><br /> But this is no <i>Shane.</i> Randolph Scott plays a tough guy where the men are concerned, but doesn't seem to mind too much when the apple of his eye (Ann Dvorak) kicks his shins black and blue. Too bad they didn't sign on with Irving Klaw for a sequel, Ann would've looked good standing on him in those sparkly heels.

I think Katpoop had it surrounded: If you liked <i>Gunsmoke,</i> you're sure to like this, too. Myself, I couldn't suspend disbelief enough to take either of them on their own terms.</reviewbody>
